This often happens without an exhaust pipe, so that the room in question becomes full of smoke. Research by the World Health Organization has shown that in poorly ventilated living areas with open wood fires, the particulate matter concentrations are 100 times the accepted level stated by the organization. The smoke from the fireplace is also rich in carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, formaldehyde, benzene and many other toxic organic compounds.
